Valentine’s Day Treat

Fly Tribe ATCs - Love

I am just popping in to wish you a Happy Valentine’s Day and share a little project I did recently. I belong to a small ATC swap group through my Fly Tribe. Each month there is a theme for us to create around. This month’s theme was “Love” of course and here are the cards I made to trade.

An ATC is a small 2.5″ X 3.5″ trading card that has a small work of art on the front, and your name, title of the art work and contact information on the back. They are only for trading, not selling and everyone loves to collect them.

Tweet Love

Well, remember the make-it, take-it project I did last month? I used the same Cricut cartridge, Doodlcharms and some left over melted crayon shavings on wax paper to create these little cards.

Love Hot Stuff

I rushed them a bit, so I am not completely proud of them, but I wanted to show you what you can do with just the smallest amount of scraps and a little planning.

Love is forever

When I looked at what I had on hand, I found lots of little treasures to use up that I have been saving. A bit of German scrap, some rub-on’s or press type, a stash of die cut tags and butterflies and lot and lots of letters in many forms.

Sweet Love

If I had it to do all over again, I would work on some background techniques that would add much more texture and character.  (Check back here soon ~ I will be showing you how to do backgrounds!)  But for spending only one afternoon on these, I think I did OK.

They are off in the mail on their way to the swap Queen who will bestow onto the members their unique and beautiful collection of Love cards. I am anxious to receive theirs and hope my friends like mine.

Share a little love today by creating a little ATC Love yourself!

Just checking in ~ February 10th

It has finally decided to be winter again around here. As the snow flies, I am warm and cozy inside. It looked like a snow globe out there today with the big snow flakes swirling in the air. Very pretty!

I want to share another one of my Tag Art Collages. It was the second one I ever worked on. I started doing these at an art fair just so that I could draw people into my booth. I would ask visitors if they would donate their tag for the painting and would clip it off and glue it onto the canvas. They were always amazed that this could be done. They would come back later to see their tag as “ART!” Brings a smile to my face! How about you? Do you have any tags to donate?

Dreams I have

I have been taking a couple of on-line courses to help expand my creative arts business more. It is quite the learning experience and I feel I am suffering through a big learning curve. It is all for the best as it has allowed me to be braver and put my self and my business “out there” more. This blog is a good example of this!

My first course was “Flying Lessons” with Kelly Rae Roberts. I found Kelly Rae on Facebook one day, friended her, then a couple of weeks later, I saw here art work in a magazine. I can’t tell you how excited I was to recognize her name and work in print. I was so thrilled for her! When I looked up her website, I saw that she was offering “Flying Lessons” for business development and I signed up. It was in the midst of my busiest time with art fairs, projects looming, a painting seminar and my kid’s schools starting, but I took the chance and squeezed in time for it. It was the best course I’ve taken for myself in a long time! It taught me to be brave, listen to my heart’s whispers and not ignore my dreams.

Now I am in the middle of a second business course called “Hello Soul, Hello Business.” Kelly Rae Roberts has partnered up with Beth Nichols for a new revolutionary approach to business development and implementation. As its name implies, there is a lot of soul searching to help us find out just what exactly motivates and drives us to peruse a creative business. They are asking us to dream big for the first 4 weeks, which is something I haven’t really done in a long time. You see, I am pretty down to Earth and think about things in the sense of realistic tangibility, not loftiness. This too has been a learning curve. Letting go and imagining is harder than you think.

One of our many tasks was to create a dream board for our business. I had difficulties separating myself from my business, so I decided to create 2 boards. I want to share them with you here.

20120205-145218.jpg

This is my business board. It is full of all the things that drives my business. Things like recycling, up-cycling and repurposing, very important issues to me. It also contains things I want to share with my customers; a passion for fashion and style, beautiful gardens, flowers and colors, a sense of whimsy, joy and light-heartedness, the need to learn then share this knowledge. It also shows my need for time to create and persue success. Lots of things going on here! Lots for me to do!

I am hoping this visual aid will help me to keep right on tract with where I want to go with my business. I will hang it in my studio so I can see it when I am working. It will be hung right next to my personal board, which you can see below.

My personal dreams

It too is full of images that I dream for myself. Things like living my best life, reaching for the sun and the moon and the stars, having hope for things to work out always for the best, confidence to face my fears and try and fulfill my dreams. I also have dreams of traveling again to places like France, Italy, Bali and the Seychelles Islands. My deepest dream that I have never been able to let go of is to find a home in Florida again, where I was happiest. Ahhhhh, dreams can be so comforting and inspiring. I hope some day I can see them come true.

I have been braver here than I normally am, sharing a part of me I usually keep to myself. It’s not easy exposing your inner self here for the world to see, but that is all part of the courses I have been taking. If you don’t say it, write it or put it out into the world, your dreams will not come true. You must take a leap of faith and put it out there. So I am hoping for the best and looking for ways to make my dreams come true.

What are your dreams? Are  you willing to put them out into the world so that they too can take hold and grow? I bet they would, if only you would try…

How green is my garden in February???

Is this the new winter?

I did a walk around my yard a day or two ago and was so surprised at what I saw. Green things growing everywhere. You see, I live in N. America where February is normally bitter cold, snowy and not so nice out. But this winter is different, VERY DIFFERENT!

Allium

Crocus

I didn’t mention it, but I wore a light weight sweater and slip on shoes, when normally I would have bundled up in multiple layers and still gotten cold. Recently it has been 40 – 50 degrees (F) warmer than normal.

Apparently warm enough for all my perennials to get a head start, a 3 month head start!

Coral Bells

Creeping ground cover

It is not unusual to see the crocus or the snow drops poke their heads above the snow, but not until March or so. I am not too worried about them however, they do just fine with cold weather. However, everything else that is coming up, I do worry about.

What will it be like when they normally come up and prepare to bloom? Will they bloom at all this year.

Creeping Phlox

Daffodils

I have seen this before a few years ago, but not this time of year. Several years ago we had an extremely warm streak in late November, when it stayed in the mid 60s (F) for at least 2 weeks. My Grape Hyacinths grew 5″ tall and started to bloom! They didn’t start blooming in the spring again until last year. Now what will happen to them? Will their inner clock ever reset?

Dandelion

Day-lily

It also makes me wonder if this is part of the Green House Effect. I had heard it was going to be a long, bitter winter with heavy snow fall in our area this year. It sure isn’t the case now. We have been having nonseasonal weather for more than a month. What are we to expect next? More of the same, or extremely heavy snowfall like some parts of the country have gotten recently?

Dusty Miller - last summers annual

Foxglove

I am not complaining about this windfall of nice weather, I just don’t understand it. Its not normal. It makes me worry about the health of our beautiful planet and what is to come in my future and the future of my children and grandchild. Are we on the verge of a global change?

Many scientist have been warning us about this for quite some time. I remember hearing about it when I was in grade school, oh so many years ago.

Grape Hyacinth

Iris

I remember it because our science teacher, Mr. Olsen, told us about it. He took us outside in mid April and announced to everyone that it was the first Earth Day and we should do our part to keep our environment clean. We then took the afternoon and picked up trash and cleaned up our school yard. I remember feeling that day like I had helped to make a difference in the world and have kept that practice of picking up trash to this day.

Phlox

Snapdragon - another annual left over

But now I ask myself if have I really done enough? What more can I do to help take care of our Earth? I recycle items instead of throwing them into the trash all the time. I don’t drive unnecessarily and I’m not too heavy on the gas petal. Granted I drive a big gas guzzler, but  I keep it in good working order and don’t hot rod all over the place.

Strawberry

Thistle

I am trying to buy products that are packaged in Earth – friendly packaging. I see more of them on the store shelves all the time. I also buy things in bulk when ever I can, that helps save gas, packaging and money. There seems like there is even more I should be doing.

So, this is something I will look into further. In what ways can I be more eco-conscience?

Moss

Tulips

I use a lot of recyclable items in my art work. Things like security envelopes I receive in the mail, wrapping paper and paper used to wrap purchased items in, old linens and trims from worn out clothing, buttons and zippers, bottle caps and campaign buttons, clothing tags, old broken jewelry and chains, plastic water bottle bottoms and much more. I really do need to explore more items to re-purpose into my artwork.

Yarrow

Corrieopsis

Perhaps I can find a source for other items that need up-cycling. I’ve not visited many second hand shops or architecture re-sale shops. I’ve also heard about a company near my town that sorts recycled trash and finds places that can use the items they keep from the landfills. Oh, this is beginning to sound interesting and exciting. I have a new source of matierials.

Trailing Vine

Unable to name this.

As I contemplate my ability to make this world a better place, I ask you to do the same. Are YOU doing enough? Is there more you could be doing? Will you help to spread the word about the urgent need to better our Earth? I hope you will, for not only our own sakes, but also for that of our children, our grandchildren, but especially for our beautiful Earth.

Think about it!

Mother Earth - our only home.

Ladies Night Out with Arts in Bartlett

Crayon Stash

Heart Charms

On January 21st, I lead a Make-it, Take-it project at the Arts in Bartlett’s Ladies Night Out event.

I decided to do a little Valentine’s Day Charm project that visitors could take home and hang in their windows or tie to a package for that someone special. I was inspired by a project I saw about 10 years ago in a Family Fun magazine and my Cricut machine.

Heart charms on adhesive back card stock.

Using my Doodlecharms Cartridge and some adhesive backed card stock I found at the craft store, I cut out the heart charms shapes in both forward and flipped image positions as it is an asymmetric design. It was fun choosing the colors to work with. I was able to get 2 sets from each sheet of card stock.

On a sheet of waxed paper you shave tiny pieces of crayon using a paring knife to get about this amount of coverage. 2 – 3 colors is enough or you might end up with a muddy mix. Fold over the waxed paper onto the shavings, sandwich it between 2 pieces of parchment paper and heat with a warm iron. Just touch the iron to the paper lightly. If you want swirled patterns, gently move the iron around a bit.

Heat with an iron

Here are some samples of color mixes I came up with.

Get creative with your colors!

Next I used a cookie cutter that just happened to be the correct size and traced around it. Cutting it out with a 1/4″ selvage allowed it to fit inside the charm cutout perfectly.

cookie cutter template

I then sandwiched the waxed paper between the 2 pieces of the charm card stock, lining them up to match the cutout insert and the outside edges.

A piece of pretty ribbon was added for a hanger.

This could be a great children’s project with proper supervision. I did a similar project with my own kids when they were young.

Pretty charms ready to give.

Here are some of our visitors that night and their creations. Aren’t they beautiful?

Lovely!

Wonderful!

I hope these charms bring great big smiles to the receivers just like they did to these creative ladies here.

Hope you enjoyed today’s post!

Adventures with Yupo® Paper

Yupo demo

4 ways to texturize Yupo paper.

Last Tuesday, I was invited to the Arts in Bartlett Artist Coffee meeting to share my interest in something called Yupo® paper. This group meets every month on the 3rd Tuesday for a few hours of discussion, art making or noshing. So far, it is an interesting group of very friendly people. I am enjoying it!

Yupo® paper is a plasticized sub-straight originally used in the printing industry for things like magazine covers and special posters. It is a very slick, white plastic paper that is so much fun to work on. I like to use acrylic and alcohol inks and can achieve very interesting results. Paints and inks do not stick to this sub-straight until completely dry. They can be manipulated by the addition of water, alcohol or window cleaner. This is where the fun begins because you never know just what you will get in the end. You must be open minded, willing to try serendipity.

Below is a sample of one of my paintings that I created last summer. This painting came about even though I really wasn’t in the mood to paint, but as I slowly worked at it, it lured me into the excitement and amazement of swirling, changing color patterns. I ended up trying for the look of the water in my swimming pool and the way the light reflects off of the surface. I think I did pretty good for not wanting to paint that day!

Pool Side

A sample of my Yupo painting work.

Tuesday’s evening started with a demo on 4 small pieces of the Yupo® paper using salt, sand, bottle caps and excelsior as texture making tools (see photo above). I also showed how to alter the inks with the application of water, alcohol and window cleaner using spray bottles and a paint brush. Everyone was eager to get started, so I stepped aside and let them play.

AiB artist coffee 1

Cecilia Green, Dir. for the Arts Center, really can paint!

Several members brought their own paints and items to use for texturing. It was fun watching them try their hand at creating with this unique medium. Playing with Yupo® can be addicting! Below are samples of what the members created. These were still wet when I photographed them, and I am anxious to see how they came out.

Just checking in ~ Jan 17th

Just a quick post to say hello! I have a bunch of things coming up this week.

I started a new e-course on marketing my creative arts business called “Hello Soul, Hello Business.” It looks very promising and I have a lot of work to do. I think it is the vehicle for me to really move my business forward.

I am also helping out at the Arts in Bartlett gallery this week. Tuesday evening I am doing a demo on Yupo® paper using alcohol and acrylic inks. A very fun process to create abstract art on a new sub-straight. Then on Friday, I am doing a Make-it Take-it for Ladies Night Out. I’m offering a Valentine’s Day charm made of paper, waxed paper and melted crayons. I will post photos later this week.

So for some eye-candy for you, here is a look at one of my tag art collages.

LBD

I created this piece in 2010 "Little Black Dress"

I like to use clothing tags to create fashion art work. I especially like to see people’s expressions when they look closely and realize what I’ve used to create the dress. I plan to do more of these. They are so much fun to make.

Come back and visit soon!

My word for 2012 is…..

Welcome to another link in the Fly Tribe Word Hop 2012!

Do you ever think about what can you do to really make a change in your life? Many of us make New Years resolutions, all with very good intentions, only to falter a few short weeks after making them. Or maybe we choose to change something and find out later that it just doesn’t fit our needs or goals. That has been me, many times over! There needs to be a better way of keeping your promise to yourself and not get into overwhelm or fail.

So, a few weeks ago, I heard about choosing one single word for the year instead. Seemed easy enough. The thought is to choose a word, one that has special meaning or impact to you, that you can apply to your life and it would be a lot easier to keep focused on and actually apply this to your life. Still seemed easy enough.

Well, it didn’t take long for me to choose my word ~

My 2012 word

My word for 2012

Why choose energize you ask?… Let me explain:

My word ~ the full view.

This time of year, being our winter here in the Midwest, it gets pretty dark and gloomy. Really zaps my spirits and, you guessed it, my energy level. It tends to affect my life quite a bit and on so many levels. Then as the year goes on, I take on new projects, I have new commitments and I get quite a bit on my plate. Again, my energy level seems to lag, I get overwhelmed and procrastination sets in. After the kids go back to school, I think to myself, “Wow! Lots of time to myself to really get those projects done that I started way back when?” I then need a shot of energy! And finally comes the year end, holidays and winter begins. Talk about overwhelm, deadlines, over-scheduling and try to make every invitation you are asked to… Whew!!! Do they sell that energy stuff legally? Caffeine only works so long, sugar runs out too quickly and does bad things to my waistline and hips! So what to do?

energize me

Me ~ putting on my Einstein thinking cap!

Simple ~ apply my brain and find ways to energize the areas in my life that need a bit of a boost and do it in small ways. Einstein and his thoughtful process of working out difficult problems one piece at a time comes to my mind. I admire how he could concentrate for days or weeks on end and work out the complex mathematical problems that have changed all of our lives for the good. I drew myself here as a “Super Hero” for my self to fly in and change my life with small bolts of energy. Notice my small bag of tricks ~ these will come in handy all year long.

string theory

connections and affects

I believe that everything is connected in my life and that everything happens for a reason. So, it isn’t much of a stretch to think that there will be a great affect to all the areas in my life if I inject a bit of energy here or there. I am hoping it has a cascading affect, much like a row of dominoes standing on edge. When one is pushed forward, the others will race forward too. Its worth a try, don’t you think?

myself

Me ~ Myself ~ I

This comes first ~ ME!

Taking good care of myself so that I can do all the things I want to do. Being kind and loving, finding happiness, eating well and staying healthy, sleeping more than 5 hours a night and traveling more when I can fit it in. With these things energizing my lifestyle, then I can put my whole self into the other areas of my life I need to work on.

Art work

My creative biz.

A good dose of energy will go into making my art career really take off and grow. I need to  zap my schedule to fit in more painting and creating time. I need to find time to look for more places and ways to sell my art work. I want to make ways of sharing my art knowledge and my enthusiasm for it with others. I need to make sure I get my paper work done before it is needed. Small steps every day is the way!

By taking care of business first, that will lead to a better organized home, happiness to those I love and live with, a feeling of well being and a need to share what I have with others by welcoming them in. I also want to zap some much needed work into my garden for food and flowers. You never have enough flowers in your yard, I say!

home

Home sweet home!

relations

When all is well ~ everyone is happier

Finally ~ my relationships with others, family, friends, social groups and my wonderful online network of friends both near and so far away. These are my life saving links. The ones who hold my hand and help me to be brave, the ones who share my silly sense of humor, the ones I listen to when they need a shoulder to cry on. YOU! My dear friends, are what keep me going, steering to a point called happiness. YOU! The ones I want to share more of myself with and can’t do without. YOU!

Come along with me and share my adventures in energizing my life in so many ways.

You can continue to see what words those in my Fly Tribe are working on by following the link. We all have lots to share. I hope you enjoy them.

Fly Tribe ~ My friendship adventure

Today was supposed to be a blog hop with some of the members of the Fly Tribe group I am honored to be a part of. Well, some of us needed a bit more time to get our posts together, (me included) and the blog hop will begin on January 9th instead. I hope you aren’t disappointing, but I promise you won’t be come Monday.

So instead, I decided to post a few photos of the visitors I had today to my “studio.” I say “studio” because in reality it is 1/2 of my laundry room, but it works for me since I have water, great lighting, a 9 foot counter-top to work on and lots of handy storage.

My visitors were two lovely ladies from my Fly Tribe group that I so love! We met up for brunch, toured Banbary Fair, the Arts in Bartlett Gallery and then came to my home for more time to get to know each other.

First Fly Tribe visit

My new friends from the Fly Tribe group.

I can’t begin to tell you how special it is to have these ladies take time out of their busy days to come and get to know me. We are all busy working on our creative arts businesses and having a community of like minded ladies has been such a boost for me. They are my sound boards, cheering section and reality checkers. I feel so blessed to have these kind of friends!

Kelly and me in the studio

Kelly choose this piece as her favorite.

Kelly Hoernig is a successful colored pencil artist I know from the Society of Decorative Painters. She is now looking to branch out into other artistic areas and will do wonderfully, I am sure.

Teresa and me in the studio

Teresa loves the purples in this one.

My other new friend is Teresa Cash-Czech who is also a drawing artist and a “late bloomer” who recently found her creative muse. She likes to bring a smile to the face of everyone she meets, and we sure had a lot of them to share today.

We are planning more visits to other Fly Tribe members, so I am looking forward to more good times together. I am sure we will have many great journeys and memories to share!

Recycling Old File Folders with Mixed Media Collage

As promised, I am sharing a project I completed last week with some recycled legal sized file folders. It is a good way to use something that might normally be thrown away. I like working with these folders because they are very sturdy and hold up well to lots of paint, paper and glue layers.

Last November, I joined one of my collage groups, Collage Sisthars, in a Mixed Media Madness Day to decorate the file folders. It is one of my favorite projects with this group as we always work together and create such beautiful things. I will share some of these decorating techniques in later posts, but for now, I wanted to show you a finished project that you might like to make yourself.

Front cover, File Folder Book

Recycling an old set of file folders can be fun!

Here are the steps I used to create this book:

Measure files to find the center point with a ruler. Mark a cutting line & cut in half.

A selection of prepped file folders

Marking the center line.

Arrange the cut folders into a pleasing arrangement color-wise. You will need to arrange them into “chapters”, 2 – 3 folders per chapter, nested into each other, so that they will lay flat when you bind them together.

This arrangement was pleasing to me.

Next you will use a hole punch to create a series of holes to run your binding ribbon through.  I used an 1/8″ hole punch to fit the size of the ribbon I choose. Be sure to keep your chapters aligned while punching these holes. Using the center fold of the files, I placed 2 sets of holes along both the top and bottom edges at 1″ and 2″ increments from the edges. Cut your ribbon about 12″ long, 2 pieces per chapter. I had 5 chapters, so I used 10 pieces of ribbon.

Punch your holes along the center fold.

Ribbon for the binding.

You will be treading your cut ribbon through the holes from the inside of the chapter to the outside. Do this for each set of chapters. Arrange your chapters on top of each other and align the edges so that they are all even. Use a strong clip to hold them together while you tie the ribbons together.

Line up the chapters together.

Clipped together and ready to tie.

Tie your ribbons together using a square knot. Make sure they are snug and there is little movement between the chapters.

Left over right, right over left, pull tight!

Now your book is complete and ready to use. These can be great little art books as is, but what mixed media artist could leave it alone? How about using it as a journal by writing over the painted surface with a paint pen? Or you could glue lined paper over the surface and write on that. Perhaps you could use it as a photo album or scrap book of ideas.  There really is not limit to the imagination.

Finished book ready for gifting,

or perhaps for more mixed media madness...

I hope you enjoyed this little project. I will be part of a blog hop on January 5th with my Fly Tribe group with our “2012 Word” project. Have you heard of this before? Come back and see more….
